Slayers: ReturnReturn presses an hour, and that's about half an hour too long. A movie composed mostly of bumbling villains that make you wonder how they put their own pants on in the morning, it was funny... for the first half. But the same gags can only drag on for so long. That's why the typical anime episode is 19 minutes long: if you're doing a one-shot gag you're not killing your audience's brain by doing it over... and over... and over... and keeping on doing it. It's a great fault the movies have over the series. While an episode can pop up on you with a shedload of gags, it can cut out on you and finish up in 19 minutes, and it's over. A movie has 30, 60, even 90 minutes to fill and can become torturous and dragged on, especially when you have numerous movies trying to use the same puns and stunts.
Yes, we understand that Lina's breasts are small, yes we understand that Naga is stupid. Yes we understand this is part of character dynamic, but when the whole drive of a movie becomes based around Naga being stupid enough to do one thing and unable to reverse it, the writers have run out of ideas. When the whole movie is composed of bumbling idiots, both villains and heros, and the most composed characters are the side-characters that are forgettable and nobody ever remembers the name of beyond "that chick with the blue hair", something is terribly wrong.
In truth it feels more like it was two movies, packed together to stretch out. The first part is about some apocalyptic power being unearthed, and the second half they ALL spend their time running like jackasses from something that looks like a giant turtle.
While I'm happy to see an enemy that couldn't just be blown away by a Dragon Slave, I can't say that makes up for the other faults of the movie.
The music score and animation are similar, if not identical, to the other movies and special releases, which never stood out too boldly to me to begin with. It always felt as bland as the rest of these productions.
The movie, overall, is slightly above average. I'd rate it about 6/10, but I'm probably being a little harsh, so keep that in mind. 7/10 would probably be how others would see it.
