Slayers: The MovieSlayers: The Movie focuses on Lina Inverse and Naga the Serpent [who's the sister of *spoiler* and daughter of *spoiler* ;D Okay, I'm not that mean, but they never outright say it anyway.] Taking place before Lina ever finds her traveling companions from the first season, this places Lina at a young 14 years old.
I'll be blunt. There's a good chance I'm biased against this movie. I've never cared for the dynamic of Lina and Naga. Naga is a basic parody of all large-chested, scantily clad anime women who don't think things through, and I appreciate that. But Lina being brash and Naga being stupid, and both being LOUD, they don't have much to off-set each other. The strength of the team-dynamic in the seasons is that there were four to six characters at any one time to balance out each others strengths and weaknesses; this was something I fell in love with, and I always felt this was the heart of the show. It made for wonderful comedy and believable relationships. The comedy here, to me, feels forced, dry, and stretched out. These are two characters that don't get along and can barely stand each other, only bound together by the strands of fate. While that can be funny occasionally, seeing it during the course of an entire movie [much less four movies and two special releases for a total of six episodes] really wears on your nerves when there's no one to balance out the malice and heat between them.
This is the greatest flaw of the movie, and any releases involving Naga the Serpent. Lina could do just as fine on her own if not better, and we wouldn't be subjected to the repetition of their rivalry.
In terms of the plot of the movie, it's fine. Not the most original story, but it's fine. It involves a resort, a demon terrorising people, and needing to go back in time to fix things he did. Like I said, it's not the most original storyline. They do throw a nice spin at you, however, that I don't want to ruin. Pay attention to Raudy, what weapon he has, what he tells Lina about the job and its relation to her... and who is in his past. And think about what happens and who Lina meets in the future. =)
It's an average movie. The spells in all the movie or special releases are pretty much represented by a pink or blue glow, which is disappointing, especially for cinema releases. It feels a little dragged on, as if they were trying to break the idea of "anime movies tend to be 45 minutes or less" which I've seen.
The music is good, but not great. It's not horrible, and I own the discs if that's worth anything... but I own all of the Slayers music collection so I'm not sure it is. It really doesn't stand out to me.
Overall, it could have been much, much better, but the measuring stick I use is very hard to match up to when it comes to Slayers [Slayers Next, and the novels]. There's still more worthwhile movies to see, as I'd rate this a 6/10 or 7/10.
