In its ancient form, the title of 'samurai' had once been assigned to the leaders of armed clans in Northern Japan who were called "goshozamurai" and, in the Muromachi period, to warriors of aristocratic clans linked to the imperial court.
It was later on extended to denote all warriors (bushi) who were permitted to wear the long and short swords (diasho) in the service of a lord, and was more specifically translated as "one who serves".
