Science Fiction Anime Reviews: Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Wow, this anime is very, very good. A fantastic gripping storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. The characters are very well done, the animation is quite good, but personally I didn't like the patterns they used on the clothing and the hair. The patterns made the anime look like transparencies over other images and it was a bit distracting. The voice acting was great, the sound was good, all except for the opening theme which is absolutely terrible. This is one of the better anime titles I've seen come from the Science Fiction genre in quite some time. The story begins with Albert, who was the son of the aristocratic Morcerf family of Paris, and his close friend, Franz, were visiting the city of Luna on the moon's surface, which was bustling with a carnival. In the opera house, Albert meets a gentleman who possesses an overwhelming presence about himself. His name is The Count of Monte Cristo. Albert gets drawn to that gentleman, who is called both a nouveau riche as well as a mysterious figure. Returning to his hotel, Albert receives a written invitation from The Count. Invited to a gorgeous dinner, the following day, the two sit in on a public execution that was the carnival's main event. However, due to The Count's suggestion, Albert is urged to make an ultimate selection that will determine the course of a human life. Getting his mood spoiled, Albert unintentionally separates from Franz after a quarrel. But then, beautiful Peppo appears in front of Albert and attempts to seduce him. All these events lead him into a trap, bringging him closer to The Count. The Count himself is a man full of secrets, whos true intention still is unknown. The setting of this anime is a combination of old Baroque style imagery with far distant future transportation and technology. I higly recommend this title to all fans of the Science Fiction genre.
