Horror Anime Reviews: Blood: The Last Vampire
Posted by: Zenthus on Dec 09, 2005

Blood: The Last Vampire
Modern day presentation of vampires has gotten droll and repetitive: They're always daywalkers, bleeding-hearts, and have minimal if any use for blood. Holy items? Forget it. But Blood goes back to a classical vampire setting to give us a breather from the stifling romantic vampires, while at the same time giving a twist: Vampires being beastial, demonic creatures. When we talk about fits of rage over blood, we MEAN it.

On an army base in Japan, a lot of people are going missing or killed. It's a typical "whodunit". Saiya, a vampire hunter, tracks down the trail of vampires to the area and ends up in a typical fight for her life.

The loop they try to throw at you at the end is to be more than expected, though, so I wouldn't exactly say they did a stellar move in that department.

The animation of the movie is beautiful. My biggest gripe is that, as always, americans are portrayed as either wide-jawed and block-headed or extremely fat. It's a stereotype that's really grating on my nerves.

The movie is done in a mix of english and Japanese, even in the original version, as it's an american army base and school based in Japan. Very good concept, in my opinion.

However, if you're going to watch Blood, be prepared for... well, Blood. The concept is you need to kill a vampire in one hit or it won't work, so anything that kills a vampire results in a spectacular display of gore.

The movie's plot is about average, but for a movie that's under an hour long, it's as good as you can expect. It's worth devoting your time to, if you like a basic horror flick.
