Action Anime Reviews: DragonBall Z
Posted by: Pascual on Oct 20, 2007

DragonBall Z
One thing is for certain: DBZ is VERY long. I believe it stands as the longest anime ever created, spanning upwards of 250 episodes (now think about that with 3 to 4 episodes per video, you could make just a little bit of money.). The show mostly follows the warrior Goku and his son Gohan, two Saiya-jin (alien species) martial arts warriors, on their many interplanetary adventures and interracial battles. The fighting is the key to the plot of DBZ (if you can call it a plot); in a nutshell, the show is a sci-fi kung-fu battle royale. The "Z" or "Earth" warriors must fight many evil villains who plot to either steal, destroy, or take over the universe. There really is nothing more to the plot than a bunch of overly-macho (and MASSIVELY built) guys duking it out to get their hands on the dragonballs, seven golden balls that grant the owener or (or three.) wish(es); of course, wishes are usually spent wishing back those who were killed in the battle to get the "balls" (could Toriyama be making up for something?). Rather simply plot for 300 episodes, ne?

Rather simple character for 300 episodes, ne? One of the biggest downfalls of this anime would have to be the complete and utter lack of character development. Characters are introduced from the start as being either "good" or "bad"; likewise, the personalities and traits of the main characters stubbornly refuse to change, causing many characters to become pesky and annoying to the point of hatred halway through the series (reminiscent of Ramna ½ anyone?). And of course, you can never forget the "bad dude" character Vegeta, who seems to make many a female drool, just like Ryouga. Simply, the cold death known as no character development slowly shows its ugly face as the series progressed past the Frieza saga (c. ep. 45-95).
