Action Anime Reviews: Elfen Lied

Elfen LiedElfen Lied begins with Lucy (Aka Nyu) escaping from a secret facility dedicated to capturing and terminating creatures called diclonius, which are humanoid's with horns. Lucy violently forces her way out of the facility, and towards the sea. She is wounded as she reaches her goal, and falls into the ocean. She is washed up on shore the next day to be discovered by two cousins going to college together, Kouta and Yuka. The two do the best they can to help the confused, ignorant girl they found and later name "Nyu". As Nyu gets herself into more and more trouble, Yuka finds that Kouta is constantly chasing after her and looking out for Nyu, completely ignoring her. This causes Yuka who is in love with Kouta, to become very jealous and hostile towards the middle of the anime.
Characters:
Nyu
Nyu alias Lucy is the main character. She is a so called "diclonius" which explains her horns. But they contain a certain power (called "vector") which is similar in a way to telekinesis.
She has a split personality. One is the very friendly and childish Nyu, who can't even speak properly and the other one is Lucy, a cold-hearted killer who kills everyone with her special ability. But both characters have one thing in common despite all their differences: They are both in love with Kouta.
Kouta
Kouta is the main guy. He is rather friendly and energetic. He moved to another town to study, but everything turns to a chaos after he meets Nyu at his first day at his new accomodation. Nyu is alway in trouble, therefore Kouta gets very concerned about her as the nice guy he is.
And without even knowing this behavior hurts Yuka, thus causing all three a hard time.
Yuka
Yuka is Koutas cousin. They parted when they were both very young, but Yuka has always been in love with Kouta. Hence she is very happy when they finally meet each other again, since Kouta wants to study at her town.
But because of several incidents, which occur soon after their reunion, Kouta and Nyu start living together in the same house and with Kouta always thinking of and being concerned about Nyu, Yuka starts to feel very depressed.
Mayu
Mayu is a very poor and homeless girl, with a very cruel past. Her stepfather abused her and her real mother did not care about her at all. Her only friend is a little dog, which is the only reason for her to continue living in this dreadful world.
But of certain circumstances she starts living together with Nyu, Koutan and Yuka and is thankful and even becomes happy again after some time. It's the first time for her that she has friends and somebody cares about her.
Nana
Nana has been a test subject in a lab for her whole life. Just as Lucy she is a "diclonius", but she wouldn't kill any human. The only reason that Nana did not die already in all the years in which she was abused for tests and experiments, was the believe in her "father".
Her "father", the one in charge of the underground laboratory and responsible for the experiments. Nana lives solely for and to serve him. That is her happiness.
Bando
Bando is the most capable member of a special underground soldier team. His objective is to kill Lucy,but he fails and loses his arms and legs. But he gets artificial ones as replacement, this made him just more crazy though. He was already a very unkind and selfish person, but now he is out seeking for revenge.
As you can see there are many questions in the series. Who are the diclonius? What will happen between Yuka, Kouta, and Nyu? Will Nyu ever fully mentally recover and become one whole person again? Well, these questions and the rest can only be answered by actually watching Elfen Lied.
